Present Perfect Continuous Tense: Tracking Ongoing Actions
Master the Present Perfect Continuous Tense for SSC and Banking exams. Learn how to describe actions that started in the past and continue today, with a focus on 'since' and 'for' rules.
The Bridge Between Past and Present
Imagine you are standing at a bus stop in a busy Indian city like Bengaluru or Delhi. You reached the stop at 8:00 AM. It is now 8:30 AM, and you are still standing there, waiting.
If you want to describe this situation, saying “I wait for the bus” (Simple Present) or “I am waiting for the bus” (Present Continuous) does not tell the whole story. These sentences do not show that your waiting started thirty minutes ago.
In the previous lesson, we learned about actions that have just been completed but still impact the present. Now, to connect an action that started in the past with the fact that it is still happening right now, we use a special tool. This tool is called the Present Perfect Continuous Tense.
How to Build the Tense
To form this tense, we combine the auxiliary verbs has or have with been and the -ing form of the main verb.
The basic structure follows this pattern:
Subject + has/have + been + Verb-ing
Negative and Question Forms
To make a sentence negative, place the word not between the first helping verb (has/have) and the word been.
- Negative Formula: Subject + has/have + not + been + Verb-ing
எதிர்மறை வடிவம் (Negative Formula): Subject + has/have + not + been + Verb-ing नकारात्मक सूत्र (Negative Formula): Subject + has/have + not + been + Verb-ing - Example: Rahul has not been going to his village since Diwali.
உதாரணம்: தீபாவளியிலிருந்து ராகுல் தன் கிராமத்திற்குச் செல்லவில்லை. उदाहरण: राहुल दीपावली से अपने गाँव नहीं जा रहा है।
To ask a question, move the helping verb (has/have) to the beginning of the sentence, before the subject.
- Question Formula: Has/Have + Subject + been + Verb-ing?
கேள்வி வடிவம் (Question Formula): Has/Have + Subject + been + Verb-ing? प्रश्नवाचक सूत्र (Question Formula): Has/Have + Subject + been + Verb-ing? - Example: Have you been waiting for long?
உதாரணம்: நீங்கள் நீண்ட நேரமாகக் காத்திருக்கிறீர்களா? उदाहरण: क्या आप काफी समय से इंतज़ार कर रहे हैं?
Choosing Has or Have
Just like we learned in the Previous Lesson on the Present Perfect, the choice between “has” and “have” depends on the subject.
| Subject Type | Helping Verbs | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Singular (He, She, It, Rahul) | has been | Rahul has been studying since morning. |
| Indefinite Singular (Someone, Nobody, Everyone) | has been | Nobody has been cleaning the park since Monday. |
| Plural (I, We, You, They, Students) | have been | Students have been protesting for two hours. |
Analogy · The Moving Luggage Expand analogy
Think of the Present Perfect Continuous Tense like a traveler carrying a heavy bag. The traveler started walking from a station in the past (the start of the action) and is still walking on the road right now (the continuation). The word been acts like the bridge that connects the starting point to the current movement.
Mastering “Since” and “For"
In competitive exams like SSC CGL or Bank PO, the most common questions in this chapter involve the words since and for. Both words tell us about time, but they are used in very different ways.
When to Use “Since”
We use since when we want to mention a specific point in time when the action started. This is like pointing to a exact date on a calendar or a specific time on a clock.
- Since 2015 (A specific year)
2015-லிருந்து (ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட ஆண்டு) 2015 से (एक निश्चित वर्ष) - Since Monday (A specific day)
திங்கள் கிழமையிலிருந்து (ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட நாள்) सोमवार से (एक निश्चित दिन) - Since 10:00 AM (A specific time)
காலை 10:00 மணியிலிருந்து (ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட நேரம்) सुबह 10:00 बजे से (एक निश्चित समय) - Since childhood (A specific stage of life)
சிறுவயதிலிருந்து (வாழ்க்கையின் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட நிலை) बचपन से (जीवन का एक निश्चित चरण)
When to Use “For”
We use for when we want to mention a duration or period of time. This tells us how many hours, days, or years the action has lasted. It usually involves a number.
- For five years (A duration)
ஐந்து ஆண்டுகளாக (கால அளவு) पाँच वर्षों के लिए (समयावधि) - For three days (A duration)
மூன்று நாட்களாக (கால அளவு) तीन दिनों के लिए (समयावधि) - For a long time (A period)
நீண்ட காலமாக (கால அளவு) लंबे समय के लिए (समयावधि) - For two hours (A duration)
இரண்டு மணிநேரமாக (கால அளவு) दो घंटों के लिए (समयावधि)
| Use Since for a “Point” | Use For for a “Period” |
|---|---|
| Since last night | For eight hours |
| Since January | For three months |
| Since independence | For many decades |
Exam Alerts: Avoiding Common Traps
Examiners often create “Error Spotting” questions by deliberately breaking the rules of this tense. Here are the three most frequent traps you will encounter.
The Present Continuous Trap
This is the most common error made by Indian aspirants. Do not use the Present Continuous tense if the sentence mentions how long the action has been happening.
- Incorrect: I am living in Chennai since 2010.
தவறான வடிவம்: I am living in Chennai since 2010. गलत: I am living in Chennai since 2010. - Correct: I have been living in Chennai since 2010.
சரியான வடிவம்: I have been living in Chennai since 2010. सही: I have been living in Chennai since 2010.
The Rule: If the sentence gives a time reference with “since” or “for,” you must use the Perfect Continuous structure.
The “Since” and “For” Swap
Examiners often use “since” with a duration or “for” with a point in time to confuse you.
- Incorrect: She has been working here since five months.
தவறு: ஐந்து மாதங்களாக (duration) என்பதால் ‘since’ வரக்கூடாது. गलत: चूँकि ‘पाँच महीने’ एक समयावधि है, इसलिए ‘since’ का उपयोग गलत है। - Correct: She has been working here for five months.
சரி: கால அளவைக் குறிக்க ‘for’ பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. सही: समयावधि को दर्शाने के लिए ‘for’ का उपयोग किया गया है। - Incorrect: They have been playing for 4:00 PM.
தவறு: 4:00 PM என்பது ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட நேரம் (point in time) என்பதால் ‘for’ வரக்கூடாது. गलत: चूँकि ‘4:00 PM’ एक निश्चित समय है, इसलिए ‘for’ का उपयोग गलत है। - Correct: They have been playing since 4:00 PM.
சரி: குறிப்பிட்ட நேரத்தைக் குறிக்க ‘since’ பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. सही: निश्चित समय को दर्शाने के लिए ‘since’ का उपयोग किया गया है।
The Stative Verb Restriction
As we learned in Chapter 5.3, some verbs describe a state of mind or possession rather than a physical action. These are called Stative Verbs (like know, love, have, own). These verbs generally do not take the “-ing” form.
- Incorrect: I have been knowing him since 2005.
தவறு: ‘Know’ என்பது ஒரு Stative Verb என்பதால் இங்கே Continuous வடிவம் வரக்கூடாது. गलत: ‘Know’ एक Stative Verb है, इसलिए यहाँ Continuous रूप गलत है। - Correct: I have known him since 2005. (Use Present Perfect instead).
சரி: இதற்குப் பதிலாக Present Perfect அமைப்பைப் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும். सही: इसके बजाय Present Perfect टेंस का उपयोग करें।
The “Since” and “Ago” Trap
Grammatically, the word ago is used to point to a finished moment in the past (Simple Past). Because since indicates an ongoing action starting from a point, using them together in the same time phrase is considered a redundancy error in exams.
- Incorrect: She has been attending classes since ten days ago.
தவறு: ‘Since’ மற்றும் ‘ago’ ஆகிய இரண்டுமே இங்கே வரக்கூடாது. गलत: यहाँ ‘Since’ और ‘ago’ का एक साथ उपयोग गलत है। - Correct: She has been attending classes for ten days.
சரி: பத்து நாட்களாக என்ற கால அளவைக் குறிக்க ‘for’ பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. सही: दस दिनों की समयावधि को दर्शाने के लिए ‘for’ का उपयोग किया गया है।
Distraction by Collective Phrases
Examiners often add extra words between the subject and the verb to trick you. Always identify the true subject to decide between “has” and “have.”
- Incorrect: The group of students have been studying.
தவறு: இங்கே ‘students’ என்பதை எழுவாயாகக் கருதக் கூடாது. गलत: यहाँ ‘students’ को कर्ता नहीं माना जाना चाहिए। - Correct: The group of students has been studying. (The singular word “group” is the true subject).
சரி: இங்கே ‘group’ என்ற ஒருமையே உண்மையான எழுவாய்; எனவே ‘has’ வர வேண்டும். सही: यहाँ एकवचन शब्द “group” ही वास्तविक कर्ता है, इसलिए “has” का उपयोग होगा।
Key Takeaways
- The Present Perfect Continuous describes an action that started in the past and continues in the present.
Present Perfect Continuous என்பது கடந்த காலத்தில் தொடங்கி, நிகழ்காலத்திலும் தொடர்ந்து நடக்கும் ஒரு செயலை விவரிக்கிறது. Present Perfect Continuous उस कार्य का वर्णन करता है जो भूतकाल में शुरू हुआ और वर्तमान में भी जारी है। - Use the formula has/have + been + Verb-ing.
இதன் சூத்திரம் has/have + been + Verb-ing என்பதாகும். इसका सूत्र (formula) has/have + been + Verb-ing है। - Use since for a specific starting point in time (like 2022 or Monday).
ஒரு செயலின் குறிப்பிட்ட தொடக்க நேரத்தைச் சொல்ல since என்பதைப் பயன்படுத்துங்கள் (உதாரணம்: 2022 அல்லது திங்கள் கிழமை). समय के एक निश्चित शुरुआती बिंदु (जैसे 2022 या सोमवार) के लिए since का उपयोग करें। - Use for for a total duration of time (like three years or two hours).
ஒரு செயலின் மொத்த கால அளவைச் சொல்ல for என்பதைப் பயன்படுத்துங்கள் (உதாரணம்: மூன்று ஆண்டுகள் அல்லது இரண்டு மணிநேரம்). समय की कुल अवधि (जैसे तीन साल या दो घंटे) के लिए for का उपयोग करें। - Never use the Simple Present Continuous (is/am/are) when a “since” or “for” time limit is given.
“Since” அல்லது “for” போன்ற நேரக் குறிப்புகள் வரும்போது, ஒருபோதும் Simple Present Continuous (is/am/are) அமைப்பைப் பயன்படுத்தாதீர்கள். जब “since” या “for” के साथ समय की सीमा दी गई हो, तो कभी भी Simple Present Continuous (is/am/are) का उपयोग न करें। In the next lesson, we will move from the present to the past to explore the Simple Past and Past Continuous Tenses.அடுத்த பாடத்தில், நாம் நிகழ்காலத்திலிருந்து கடந்த காலத்திற்குச் சென்று, Simple Past மற்றும் Past Continuous பற்றி ஆராயப் போகிறோம். अगले पाठ में, हम वर्तमान से भूतकाल की ओर बढ़ेंगे और Simple Past और Past Continuous Tenses के बारे में जानेंगे।
