Degree Modifiers and Quantifiers: The Mechanics of Little and Few
Master the usage of Little, A Little, The Little and Few, A Few, The Few. Learn how article placement changes the meaning of sentences in competitive exams.
The Power of Small Words
In the previous lesson, we looked at how “too much” and “much too” can change the intensity of a sentence. Today, we dive deeper into the world of quantity. In English, how you describe a small amount depends on two things: what you are counting and what you want the listener to feel.
A single letter, the letter “a” can completely flip the meaning of your sentence from disappointment to hope. For a banking or SSC aspirant, confusing “Little” with “A Little” is a common error that examiners exploit in every paper. Let us master these small but mighty words once and for all.
The First Test: Can You Count It?
Before choosing between “Few” and “Little,” you must look at the noun that follows. As we learned in our chapter on Nouns, some things can be counted individually, while others cannot.
Using Few with Countable Nouns
We use Few, A Few, and The Few only with things we can count one by one. These are Countable Nouns and they must always be in their plural form.
- Examples: Friends, books, days, scholars, spare parts, banks, students, candidates, mistakes, coins.
உதாரணங்கள்: Friends, books, days, scholars, spare parts, banks, students, candidates, mistakes, coins. उदाहरण: Friends, books, days, scholars, spare parts, banks, students, candidates, mistakes, coins.
Using Little with Uncountable Nouns
We use Little, A Little, and The Little with things that we measure as a whole or a mass. These are Uncountable Nouns and they are always singular. They do not have a plural form.
- Examples: Water, patience, money, advice, information, jewelry, luggage, knowledge, hope, doubt, effort, energy.
உதாரணங்கள்: Water, patience, money, advice, information, jewelry, luggage, knowledge, hope, doubt, effort, energy. उदाहरण: Water, patience, money, advice, information, jewelry, luggage, knowledge, hope, doubt, effort, energy.
The Magic of the Article “A"
Once you know whether the noun is countable or uncountable, you must decide the “tone” of your sentence. This is where most students make mistakes.
1. The Negative Tone (Hardly Any)
When you use a word without the article “a”, it has a negative meaning. It implies that the amount is so small that it is almost useless or insufficient.
Few (Countable): “Few students passed the difficult test.” (This means almost no students passed; the result is disappointing.)
Few (Countable): “Few students passed the difficult test.” (இதன் பொருள் கிட்டத்தட்ட ஒரு மாணவர் கூடத் தேர்ச்சி பெறவில்லை என்பதாகும்; இது ஒரு ஏமாற்றமளிக்கும் முடிவு.) Few (Countable): “Few students passed the difficult test.” (इसका अर्थ है कि लगभग किसी छात्र ने परीक्षा पास नहीं की; परिणाम निराशाजनक है।) Little (Uncountable): “He has little hope of recovery.” (This means he has almost no hope; the situation is grim.)
Little (Uncountable): “He has little hope of recovery.” (இதன் பொருள் அவருக்கு முன்னேற்றம் அடைய கிட்டத்தட்ட எந்த நம்பிக்கையும் இல்லை என்பதாகும்; நிலைமை மிகவும் மோசமாக உள்ளது.) Little (Uncountable): “He has little hope of recovery.” (इसका अर्थ है कि उसे ठीक होने की लगभग कोई उम्मीद नहीं है; स्थिति गंभीर है।)
2. The Positive Tone (Some)
When you add the article “a”, the meaning becomes positive. It implies that even though the amount is small, it exists and might be enough for a specific purpose.
A Few (Countable): “A few students passed the test.” (This means at least some students passed; it is a better result.)
A Few (Countable): “A few students passed the test.” (இதன் பொருள் குறைந்தபட்சம் சில மாணவர்கள் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றுள்ளனர் என்பதாகும்; இது ஒரு சிறந்த முடிவாகும்.) A Few (Countable): “A few students passed the test.” (इसका अर्थ है कि कम से कम कुछ छात्र पास हुए; यह एक बेहतर परिणाम है।) A Little (Uncountable): “There is a little hope for him.” (This means some hope exists; there is still a chance.)
A Little (Uncountable): “There is a little hope for him.” (இதன் பொருள் ஓரளவிற்கு நம்பிக்கை இருக்கிறது என்பதாகும்; இன்னும் வாய்ப்பு உள்ளது.) A Little (Uncountable): “There is a little hope for him.” (इसका अर्थ है कि कुछ उम्मीद है; अभी भी एक मौका है।)
Analogy · The Half-Glass Rule Expand analogy
Think of Little and Few as looking at a glass and saying, “It is almost empty” (Negative). Think of A Little and A Few as looking at the same glass and saying, “It has some water in it” (Positive). The “A” adds a drop of positivity to the word.
| Word Pair | Noun Type | Hidden Meaning | Tone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Few | Countable Plural | Almost none | Negative |
| A Few | Countable Plural | At least some | Positive |
| Little | Uncountable | Almost none | Negative |
| A Little | Uncountable | At least some | Positive |
The Specific Quantity: Using “The”
There is a third version where we use the article “the”. This indicates a specific small amount that we have already mentioned or identified.
The Few: “The few friends he has are all very loyal.” (He doesn’t have many friends, but we are talking about all of those specific friends he has.)
The Few: “The few friends he has are all very loyal.” (அவருக்கு அதிக நண்பர்கள் இல்லை, ஆனால் அவரிடம் இருக்கும் அந்த குறிப்பிட்ட நண்பர்களைப் பற்றி நாம் பேசுகிறோம்.) The Few: “The few friends he has are all very loyal.” (उसके पास बहुत दोस्त नहीं हैं, लेकिन हम उन सभी विशिष्ट दोस्तों के बारे में बात कर रहे हैं जो उसके पास हैं।) The Little: “I spent the little money I had.” (I didn’t have much money, but I spent all of the specific amount I possessed.)
The Little: “I spent the little money I had.” (என்னிடத்தில் அதிக பணம் இல்லை, ஆனால் என்னிடம் இருந்த அந்த குறிப்பிட்ட மொத்தப் பணத்தையும் நான் செலவு செய்தேன்.) The Little: “I spent the little money I had.” (मेरे पास बहुत पैसा नहीं था, लेकिन मैंने अपने पास मौजूद पूरी विशिष्ट राशि खर्च कर दी।)
Exam Secret: In Error Spotting questions, if you see a relative clause like “that I had,” “that he gave,” or “available with him” after the noun, you almost always need to use The Few or The Little.

Key Takeaways
Use Few versions for Countable nouns (plural) and Little versions for Uncountable nouns (singular).
எண்ணக்கூடிய பெயர்ச்சொற்களுக்கு (plural) Few சார்ந்த சொற்களையும், எண்ண முடியாத பெயர்ச்சொற்களுக்கு (singular) Little சார்ந்த சொற்களையும் பயன்படுத்துங்கள். गणनीय संज्ञाओं (plural) के लिए Few संस्करणों का और अगणनीय संज्ञाओं (singular) के लिए Little संस्करणों का प्रयोग करें। Few and Little without “a” mean “almost nothing” and carry a negative tone.
“a” இல்லாத Few மற்றும் Little ஆகிய சொற்களுக்கு “கிட்டத்தட்ட ஒன்றும் இல்லை” என்று பொருள், இது எதிர்மறைத் தொனியைத் தரும். “a” के बिना Few और Little का अर्थ “लगभग कुछ नहीं” होता है और इनका स्वर नकारात्मक होता है। A Few and A Little mean “some” and carry a positive tone.
A Few மற்றும் A Little ஆகிய சொற்களுக்கு “ஓரளவு அல்லது கொஞ்சம்” என்று பொருள், இது நேர்மறைத் தொனியைத் தரும். A Few और A Little का अर्थ “कुछ” होता है और इनका स्वर सकारात्मक होता है। The Few and The Little refer to the “entire specific small amount” that is available or mentioned.
The Few மற்றும் The Little ஆகியவை இருக்கும் அல்லது குறிப்பிடப்பட்ட “குறிப்பிட்ட முழுமையான சிறிய அளவை” குறிக்கின்றன. The Few और The Little उपलब्ध या उल्लिखित “संपूर्ण विशिष्ट छोटी मात्रा” को संदर्भित करते हैं। If a sentence specifies a limited amount (e.g., “money I had”), use the The version.
ஒரு வாக்கியம் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட அளவைக் குறித்திருந்தால் (உதாரணமாக, “money I had”), The பதிப்பைப் பயன்படுத்துங்கள். यदि कोई वाक्य एक सीमित मात्रा निर्दिष्ट करता है (जैसे, “money I had”), तो The संस्करण का प्रयोग करें। In the next lesson, we will move from modifiers of nouns to modifiers of actions. We will explore the Types and Sequencing of Adverbs, where we master the critical MPT Rule and learn why you can never say “fastly” in an exam.
